Grinning Skull Miniatures release: The Oggborg

19 May

Another week, another Grinning Skull release over at Alternative Armies! This time we’ve got the oggborg and oggbot, enhanced cybered up oggum war vets.

Oggborgs (also known as Cybogs) are battle worn veterans of serious conflict. When an Oggum trooper survives greivous injury, they are sometimes fixed and augmented with crude cybernetic technology of Oggum design.
Although this surgery is mostly voluntary, it’s usually forced upon the wounded by their warlord’s unwillingness to let their favourite lackeys from leaving his retinue.
Once an Oggum undergoes such an experiment, most will experience severe psycological changes, even possibly suffering partial or full lobotomisation in the process. Usually these subjects are then reprogrammed soley for battle, wiping out their previous personality for good.
An Ogbot is such an oggborg who has undergone so much cybernetic enhancement that all remenants of their previous life has gone, and are now little more than a machine with a few organic parts, but it is not uncommon for ogbots to have full concious thought if a fresh undamaged brain was first transplanted into a suitable host machine.
Still, not all conversions serve so willingly, and many will resist against control software to enjoy a semi normal existence. Those who have become so mentally damaged may reject everything and turn to the life of a wanderer and all the trappings of freedom. These might find the employ of other warlords, pirates and mercenaries or other groups of outcasts, so an oggborg may be found anywhere in alliance with anyone.
This technology is widely used by most factions, such as the Santyr cult of the Iron legion, or the mighty Og-mech of the golden Imperialists. Even the Okvan scholars and scientists create their brainwashed minions using this tech. The Scrofa tend to shun such things as is not natural, but even oggborg renegades and converts can be found in their number.
Even with the erratic malfunctions and glitches inherent in oggum technology, these grizzled warriors are legendry in combat, and should be engaged in battle with great caution.

These little bleeders are fun minis, I’m sure there’s plenty of games they’ll fit into, if not just oggum! These figures are available now from Alternative Armies, as is the rest of the Grinning Skull Miniature range, along with this months other new releases, like the Kize and the Oggra!

Mini Sculpting: 28mm Ettin/2 headed troll; Fnar-frag the two faced!

6 Mar

DSCF3284

Ok, you’re going to have to forgive my net connection, it’s not great at the best of times, but like I have told you before, I promised to show you some stuff I have been working on.

This is a personal WIP for my WFB orc and gobbo army, mainly my troll mob. I must admit that trolls are my fave lot out of the orc stuff, and have scored me many victories while using them in game. The only trouble I find with them is the fact that they are so darned expensive to buy, so I spend plenty of time searching around different places for old troll figures to use as proxies, so much that I decided to add to my ranks by making some myself.

DSCF3273

I thought I’d make him of the two headed variety, after rewatching “Troll Hunter” I thought it would stand out more than the usual type, and that he’d serve best for part of my command section of my two units. First thing you might notice is the weird positioning of his hand. This is for a reason, I wanted him to be holding a goblin marionette puppet on strings. However that still might change if I decide otherwise, but for now thats the plan.

Also I wanted him to exhibit a left/right personality, sort of good cop/bad cop, so that’s why the puppet holding side has a goofy, child like  essence to it, while the other is more “business” orientated and ready for some pagga!

DSCF3282

Also, I wanted his gait to reflect that being a troll, he really needed to be quite deformed and twisted, especially with having the two headed mutation, so the slight twist in his stride is intentional. I wanted him to match the other trolls I have, so he needed plenty of warty scales, which will highlight nicely when painted in contrasting colour, oh yeah, and popeye type fore arms too!

I think it’s great the fact that GW old school trolls have the definitive cartoon look to them, which I needed to try and match, especially with him being more of a character figure than the usual rank and file troll. Lots of you might know that I sometimes diss GW, but it also matches my own style of modelling in a cartoon look, and seeing as though it’s going to be used for oldhammer and 6th Ed WFB, I don’t see the problem. Before anyone mentions the base, he’s now glued onto a 40×40 monster sized base with gluegun glue, just because it is a quick and easy way of adding a durable texture instead of sculpting it on, oh the many uses of the humble gluegun!!

I really want to release my own range of 28mm trolls and troll kin in the future hopefully, maybe a KS (ok, so don’t moan about crowdfunding, I actually think stuff like Kickstarter is a fine idea and many out there are a bit sick of the whole thing, but it does serve a purpose) I have quite a few ideas for several different types of troll races that would fit nicely into the O&G army lists, as proxies for the various troop types rather than the regular Orcs and their ilk.

Next up will be a decent paint job once I finsih the puppet goblin, or war yoyo, or even a human casualty (still not 100% on what to do) but I’ll show you once the next bit has been done.

Next up, is my Oggam settlement board (once my connection will allow more uploads)

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Bio Syndrome Kickstarter

5 Feb

Everyone likes something for free? Right? Well, I’d like to draw your attention to this KS for the Biosyndrome skirmish rules.

For those who don’t already know anything about BioSyndrome, it’s a currently free set of skirmish wargaming rules, of which allows you to use what ever 28mm miniatures you like to have a game with. It’s geared toward the zombie/modern/post apoc setting, but there are rules and plans afoot to allow adaption to the fantasy genre within the system. It’s a game that I’ve been planning to give a try out using my 15mm zombie stuff, but haven’t yet had time. I do own a PDF copy and from first impressions it looks ok, plus it’s free,  so that’s a bonus! I do like the idea of the fantasy version, so that might be worth me having a bash too, afterall, what’s not to like about a free zombie wargame?!

So why run a Kickstarter for something that’s free? I hear you ask? Well, the game will remain free, but this is for a high quality colour digital version of the rules, plus additional material in digital format.

With the project being fully funded now, it looks as if the book and site will become reality, but there’s still plenty of time to get in on this for yourself if you’d like to back this campaign, go and check the game out (plus you can get the free PDF rules too!)

Crowdfunding Preview: Achtung! Cthulhu Skirmish game KS from Spartan Games!

22 Dec

For those who aren’t familiar, Achtung! Cthulhu is  the WW2 era combined with the mythos of HP Lovecraft and his contemparies. Up till now it’s been focused on the RPG side of things, but news is 2014 will see the release of the skirmish version of the popular setting.

I am a big fan of anything mythos, but not so keen on WW2 stuff, but this might change my mind about that. What is clear, is that there are a few great looking mini’s there and no doubt there will be some great opportunities to use some other companies 28mm WW2/WeirdW2/Cthulhu stuff to add more options to the mix! Hey, there’s probably loads of scifi and fantasy stuff that’d be good too, at this rate I’ll be a convert to the elder gods!

check out the Ronald Macdonalds in the Chapman Brothers instalation, why so many clowns…

I can imagine tabletop scenes not unlike the ones made by the renown art duo, the Chapman brothers, whose massive dioramas of WW2 carnage and evil, wouldn’t seem too out of place for the premise of the game, just with added tentacles and gribblies for that extra dimension of “urgh”! I fear that the 28mm wargamer in me is going to resurface if things keep up like this!

This could be a hit for 2014, watch this space. The stars may be right.

10mm Zombies now available from Pendraken!

24 Sep

Finally it’s time to start zombie wargaming in a new scale, yes Pendraken have released the new scifi revamps, which includes the much anticipated zombies and survivors!

Now I just need to start thinking about making some appropriate scenery in 10mm and getting some of these bad boys! If you don’t wargame the apocolypse, then I forsee this could be an ideal low cost way to get into the genre, especially as they are cheap as chips!! Ok, so it’s not 15mm (Like I harp on about all the time) but it is still zombies, so all is forgiven!! As for a ruleset, most would work with a bit of jiggling around, but I’d recommend USE ME ZOMBIE DAWN ( as it’s the one I play) You can read my review here if you want to take a look!

SFZ1 walking zombies (10) £1.80

SFZ2 standing zombies (10) £1.80

SFZ3 crawling zombies £1.80

SFZ4 female zombies and child

SFZ5 zombie dogs (5) £1,00

SFZ6 survivors (30) £5.00

Also there is an army/bundle available if you want to start 10mm zombie gaming, for the great price of £13 for 60 assorted zombies and dogs, and 25 survivors, thats plenty if you plan on skirmish gaming with them, you might need a few more if you want to base them in multiples and go all guns for sheer numbers!

Check out the zombies on the Pendraken website http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Sci-Fi-c24/Zombies-sc294/

Another great figure released in the scifi revamp is this Grey alien, as usual I see the implications in 15mm gaming, and I think at 12mm high he’d make great minions for the whole plethora of greys already available from lots of 15mm  manufacturers. Unarmed civilians, technical personel and so on can all be achieved with this figure, I know I’ll be getting a pack of these too on my next order to join my small advance force of greys (plus death ray UFO) If you really have to use them in 10mm scale gaming (god forbid! :)) they’d be cool for that too, and much of the 15mm stuff like saucers and drones will work equally well too!

You’ll find all the new released Scifi stuff, as well as the old stuff (don’t forget the civilian figures from the old range, they will do fine for extra citizens in any zombie or UFO invasion!) over on the Pendraken website http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Sci-Fi-c24/

Cheque now please Leon!!

Ciao!
