Rogue Stars: Let the ideas start to flow!

So, with Osprey’s Rogue Stars ( Rogue Stars: Skirmish Wargaming in a Science Fiction Underworld (Osprey Wargames) ) winging its way to me through the post (yes, I succumbed to it in the end, the temptation was far too great!) I really look forward to getting it so I can have a really good read to ingest all the lovely space opera flavour I’m hoping there to be!

I’ve not really had much chance to peruse any osprey wargames rules other than Frostgrave, but I have read my share of other Osprey books (I absolutely love the Jason and the Argonauts book, review of which is here: Osprey Adventures: Jason and the Argonauts Review)

All these ideas flowing, with plenty more to come I expect, especially when I get a good browse at the rules and fluff has got me thinking. I am going to need a new baseboard or two and maybe some playing mats, plus a fair bit of 28mm scifi scenery will need to be made, not to mention getting the minis together (I think I have plenty of miniatures to fit this game already, but I have seen a load that I wouldn’t mind getting…!)

I’ll try my best to do to create more min scenic tutorials, just like the Grim’s Dungeons of Doom series!

What I would like to do is take this opportunity to invite you on my journey too, I’ll document my thoughts, ideas, miniatures purchases & painting, scenery tutorials and so forth, similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom and even share any battle reports along the way.

Both spotlights are working! There will be no escape for trespassers!

I suppose that this is going to start me off with a new article series as a result, but I reckon that those 28mm Sci-fi gamers of you out there (especially warhammer 40k, Oldskool Rogue Trader and other Sci-fi wargames that are available) will find plenty of useful stuff for them to justify it.

I’m thinking that I’ll make an interior set of terrain similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom, but not too much, that way it’ll be interchangeable with the walls, floors and other fantasy scenic stuff (the cavern walls will fit nicely in an Alien planet theme, maybe some alien flora and fauna, but then I’m going to have to do a few 28mm Sci-fi buildings and maybe something along the lines of the old Necromunda scenery from the 90’s. Where ever possible, I’ll point you in the way of useful resources and info too, which will be a nice change to 15mm model making in the Sci-fi wargaming I’ve got used to.

Like I’ve said, I imagine that there’s going to be loads of ideas free-flowing, but I really want to know what you think too. Is there anything I should be trying out? What scenics do you want to see me make? Just let me know by commenting below,  tell me about your ideas or your experience of Rogue Stars gameplay.

I’ll be back later with some possible miniature choices, that is, once I’ve plundered my lead piles…:)

Grim’s Dungeons of Doom: Realm of the Dead; Necropolis Obelisk

Ok, so finally I found the photos for this episode of Grim’s Dungeons of Doom; Realm of the dead. This article, we are going to make some Necropolis Obelisks or tomb marker type monuments, these will match the rest of the other dungeon set and work well as standalone pieces in their own right. Grim’s Dungeons of Doom: Realm of the Dead; Metal railed walls.

This time in the realm of the dead themed terrain set, we are going to tackle some simple metal railed walls, using an easy to find and mostly free material, packaging foam.

Sorry about the delay in the latest installment of Grim’s Dungeons of Doom, I must say that I have been taken up with some side projects, so I do apologise!

This is quite an easy make, nothing too taxing for these, but the end result is quite pleasing.

4xD: Paint it grey; The Monotone Monologue

Now, there must be some of you out there thinking to yourselves that I seem to favour the colour grey quite a bit. Maybe it may be a subliminal reflection upon myself and my psyche, but there is method in my madness.

Sure, I have to admit that a great deal of my terrain work features the colour, but I think it is reflective of the world around us. Grey surrounds us in the form of natural rocks, the cloudy skies, the urban tarmac below our feet, and of course, the endless municipal 20th century buildings and dwellings we seem to have in the western world. As depressing as it sounds, grey is everywhere.

Ok, so where is the colour? Why should this real life dredge apply so much to terrain building and my stuff primarily when I have all the colours in the world to deal with in these imaginary worlds that I can create?

The grey monotony of the stark and austere dungeon terrain is broken by the colour of the individual figures and models.

As much as I like garish and bright colours, I believe that terrain should not just look pretty on the table, but should reflect the world imagined around them. More importantly, since I’m dealing with miniatures, as much as I want my terrain to shine, it’s them that are the primary accent of colour on the table, the battlefield and terrain are secondary. I feel that everything else should be muted, that way the focus is on the action and the models, and making sure that the figures are not lost in a blur of colour. Monochrome terrain helps the colourful figures pop and stand out from the scenics. Now I’m not saying that everything should be grey on the table, but my preference allows for highlights that draw the eye, not to bombard the eye with far too much busy colour that might not be needed unless it’s really called for, hence making the important figures and objectives the centre of attention.

Grey everywhere, yet the lone blue creature stands out from the scene.

Now this is just my own opinion, but I much prefer this to overtly busy and incorrectly used colour palettes. I would however like to know your thoughts. Do you think that I’m talking bull? or do you think there is some truth to this?
