Rogue Stars: Let the ideas start to flow!

16 Sep

So, with Osprey’s Rogue Stars ( Rogue Stars: Skirmish Wargaming in a Science Fiction Underworld (Osprey Wargames) ) winging its way to me through the post (yes, I succumbed to it in the end, the temptation was far too great!) I really look forward to getting it so I can have a really good read to ingest all the lovely space opera flavour I’m hoping there to be!

I’ve not really had much chance to peruse any osprey wargames rules other than Frostgrave, but I have read my share of other Osprey books (I absolutely love the Jason and the Argonauts book, review of which is here: Osprey Adventures: Jason and the Argonauts Review)

All these ideas flowing, with plenty more to come I expect, especially when I get a good browse at the rules and fluff has got me thinking. I am going to need a new baseboard or two and maybe some playing mats, plus a fair bit of 28mm scifi scenery will need to be made, not to mention getting the minis together (I think I have plenty of miniatures to fit this game already, but I have seen a load that I wouldn’t mind getting…!)

I’ll try my best to do to create more min scenic tutorials, just like the Grim’s Dungeons of Doom series!

What I would like to do is take this opportunity to invite you on my journey too, I’ll document my thoughts, ideas, miniatures purchases & painting, scenery tutorials and so forth, similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom and even share any battle reports along the way.

Both spotlights are working! There will be no escape for trespassers!

I suppose that this is going to start me off with a new article series as a result, but I reckon that those 28mm Sci-fi gamers of you out there (especially warhammer 40k, Oldskool Rogue Trader and other Sci-fi wargames that are available) will find plenty of useful stuff for them to justify it.

I’m thinking that I’ll make an interior set of terrain similar to Grim’s Dungeons of Doom, but not too much, that way it’ll be interchangeable with the walls, floors and other fantasy scenic stuff (the cavern walls will fit nicely in an Alien planet theme, maybe some alien flora and fauna, but then I’m going to have to do a few 28mm Sci-fi buildings and maybe something along the lines of the old Necromunda scenery from the 90’s. Where ever possible, I’ll point you in the way of useful resources and info too, which will be a nice change to 15mm model making in the Sci-fi wargaming I’ve got used to.

Like I’ve said, I imagine that there’s going to be loads of ideas free-flowing, but I really want to know what you think too. Is there anything I should be trying out? What scenics do you want to see me make? Just let me know by commenting below,  tell me about your ideas or your experience of Rogue Stars gameplay.

I’ll be back later with some possible miniature choices, that is, once I’ve plundered my lead piles…:)

15mm Space Orc Army: the mob so far…

22 Mar

DSCF3884

Well, I thought I might a well share my progress on my 15mm space orc mob thats finished so far. I still need to get lots more done yet, more mobs of boys including my own lot (from CP models) as well as some GZG ones, more Ogryns, squigs, dreds and vehicles. They’ve ended up quite cool, with a unique feel, which will probably get better when I add the rest.

I like the GZG orcy types, while not similar to mine, I find that if you paint them all a putrid green, they look fine! Plenty more of these still left to paint and add, although it’ll take some time (I’m not the fastest painter…)

Vehicles and dredds, all I have done so far is these. I’m aiming for probably two units of three dredds, which will add a fair bit of firepower, plus I’ve got a battle wagon (Warbus) about 50% done, and even a dropship, but that’s going to need more TLC. One Squiggoth should suffice.

DSCF3891

These I’ll be adding loads more of (I have quite a few) again will take time, but so far I’m low on actual orcs, plus they need a banner boy. I’ve got a feeling this army will be huge when I’m done.

DSCF3892

Not sure if I’ll do any more ogryns (might save the others for my imperial guard force) I like them, but they don’t feel savage enough (might need to sculpt some… or convert some fantasy ones)

DSCF3893

The boss and his retinue are made up from the ones from CP that I sculpted, as well as  converted 15mm sci-fi adventurers from them also.

The gobbos are made up from Magister militum, foundry(?), Pendraken and irregular goblins/orcs. These were just standard fantasy ones, converted with a bit of greenstuff and some neat MJ figures 15mm guns. I still have a few left to finish, including a shit shoveller. Out of everything here, I think I enjoyed these the most. Plenty of character, so I reckon I’ll have to do a big horde of these. I might even use my snotling bases with them (which are also made up from a variety of manufacturers of 10 & 15mm goblins) to add some feral types as fodder (they are based as the 40 x 40 swarms as per WFB, but it shouldn’t matter.) I’ve gotta get some of the Ion age ones yet, as I’m loving the really individual nature of this army.

Squigs are a combo of my own from CP, Pendraken Squoggler, and a great classic GW Kev Adams one to give them a truly RT feel. The herder is a converted Pendraken night orc (now carrying a small squig) To add to this section, there are quite a few more squogglers to paint up (even so they are supposed to be 10mm, they fit great here) and a load of CP carnosaurs (looking fine as large blind cave squigs) not to mention my own, might even add a few old GW ones as well.

I’m in sculpting mode presently, so they are all going to have to wait. Maybe I’ll have to make those other orc troop types I’ve been thinking of…

A bit of painting does you good!

I’ve been trying to fit in some miniature painting over this last week, I admit that it’s been ages since I’ve had time to get some colours on any of my miniatures, so with a bit of inspiration from my lead haul I attained from triples a few weeks ago, I thought it was about time I at least kept my hand in it. (I’ll be posting a belated triples review later…)

As you can see, these weird beasties are thhe start of my 15mm version of my 40k tyranid swarm. So, I know there isn’t any 15mm tyranid stuff, let alone anything in 15mm for 40k, but since there are many great hobbyists creating fantastic 15mm versions of warhammer 40,000 stuff on the net, they too have been my muse to try it for myself.

While the above may not be 100% acurate renditions of the tyranids, I’ve tried to get stuff that is near enough for me. You’ll notice there are some cracking Pendraken worms, alien creatures and a queen that fit nicely with the theme, as well as Darkest star miniatures skyth war beasts that serve well as my primes and hive tyrants. Even a classic kryomek helion which I bagged from the bring and buy stalls makes a good carnifex type stand in. To unify the tyranid feel, I’ve got some GW tyranid rippers too, whilst not that intimidating in 28mm, they make great tyranid beasts in 15mm.

I decided on a “spiderman” colour scheme for them after seeing similar on the net, its bright and stands out, as well as tying the whole lot together. The pic is just a few of the swarm, and I did them to just see if the idea would work as a force, which I think does.

DSCF3539

Next up is the first bit of the opposition, my Orcs. Although I have only two actual foot figures done (3 if you count the tiny gobbo gunner here) my warbus is looking swell! I have still some work to go yet, but I’d say its 80% done and will serve my “Brass Crabz” warband well!

DSCF3534

DSCF3533

I am a long way from finishing any of the two sides, but hopefully I’ll try and find the time in between jobs to carry on. I’m planning a genestealer cult army after these and maybe some other 40k themed forces too. Next I’ll be showing you the squiggoth that i’m painting (it’s a great scotia grendel kev adams warbeast I had knocking around) it too is coming on a treat with all the added bells and whistles.

Right, I suppose I’d better get back to sculpting and modelling, so many distractions….

Hey GW, Why no 15mm Warhammer 40K?

Since I have a bit of quiet relaxing time to myself tonight, chilling on my hols, I have been musing again over various stuff.

This one has been bugging me for ages. No doubt it’s a bane of contention for other 15mm wargamers the world over.

Why hasn’t GW jumped on this bandwagon, since 15mm scifi is a hot property at the moment (probably due to the economy forcing players to downsize their lead addiction from 32/30/28mm to 15mm) GW have an opportunity to get those disillusioned ex-40K players back in the fold, but alas for those 15mm-ers who crave to play 40K in the smaller scale, there are scant little decent proxy models for the various sides and races of the 40k fluff, unless your willing to faff about with dozens of miniature firms to get odds and sods. Sure you can even play old faves like Necromunda in 15mm pretty easily, just a shame they dropped it years ago!

Yes it’s true that indeed there are lots of us who’d jump at the chance of this, and many out there are busy scratch building and converting away to create their own versions of space marines or orcs etc, but if they are anything like me, I know they’d sell their first born for some decent official 15mm miniatures!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the fact that if Games Workshop actually get around to doing this, It will cost me a bloody fortune, maybe not as much as a 28/30mm force (Well, if GW have anything to do with it, it’ll be more than everyone elses stuff!) Speaking as a long time 40k player, I have been into the game for years and years, since the first edition (which is the best in my humble opinion) but since the Evil Empire emerged and crushed the soul from it, I have been crying inside…..

Still, would it be a good thing if they did a 15mm 40k? It’s bound the drive the price of 15mm figures up, which is pretty bad for us since most of us switched to 15mm to escape the over inflation of figure prices.

Personally, I’d like to throw this question out there to you people, and ask your thoughts on this.

What’s your opinions on this whole thing?

Let me know….
