Another General Election, same old bag of shit. Grinning Skull’s politics rant!

7 Jun

Well, it’s a subject that I don’t entertain very often, the reason being, I fucking hate politics.

For us here in the UK, we have a General Election tomorrow to see which c**t gets put into office (or stays in) but while I usually exercise my right to vote, this year I can’t be bothered.

I have decided that however I vote, the chances are it’ll end up being one of these freaks in power. None of them are either inspiring, nor are they a strong leader I’d prefer to run this broken country I live in. Full of lies, full of broken promises, political candidates parade around kissing babies and arses, just to secure your votes, and if you are fool enough to swallow their bullshit, more fool you.

Now, I don’t want to start a discourse on here about how one party is better than the other, in my opinion, they are all the same. Nor do I want to upset any of you with your views, you vote for any you like, just that they offer nothing that I’m buying.

I’m sick of hearing about how they are going to sort things out, the economy, terrorism, health service, public sector, immigration, defence etc etc etc…Fuck it, all they ever do is squabble and back peddle. No matter how I would have voted, the results will always be the same.

A long time ago I would have voted LibDem (free the weed and all that) but after their cosying in bed with the Tories last time, what is the point? Plus Farron is not someone I could see fighting for us Brits on the international stage. It’s not like my vote would even count in my area anyway, it’s so up Labours arse round here, there’s no doubt that they’ll get in here yet again, absolutely pointless.

Whatever happens, the country will be broken. The SNP will eventually split the union (On a side note, why do the SNP leaders of late have second names of fish? Salmond, Sturgeon, what next Carp, Eel, Squid?) The NHS will end up overstretched and we’ll all have to pay up or die for medical help. Prices will go up and up and up and up, squeezing us for our last drops of blood.

There is nothing to inspire by having an election, just like the Brexit referendum that has just left chaos and doom, the only hope there seems to be is that of the movies and fiction. Still, at least the rest of the world is fucked as well, we’ll all go down together when the space brothers come and farm us for meat.

This’ll be the last time I even mention the subject, I’d rather not think about it. Time to put my fingers in my ears and sing “lalalalalalalalalala….” until it’s quiet again, I’ll just wake up the next morning and get on with things as if these monsters don’t exist…

The Skulltaliser (Otherwise known as, The Wordpress Monetisation Rant!)

1 May

So, where to begin…ages ago, as the old memory serves that is, blundering head first into trying to monetise my blog here, I ended up hitting a snag, old readers will remember the Semalt debarkle, and as a result of that rant, I ended up dropping myself in the shit and getting this blog shut down. Reason being, that I had advertisments and affiliate links on site, for which, since I am a cheapskate and pay fuck all for the running of this site, was told unless I payed the yearly rate of $99, I would be breaking the TOCs.

Fair enough, since I make a big fat zero from here, was fair enough, but it did put me off even trying to step up efforts to improve the blog for the future. Sure, I can advertise my own projects and services here without fear of getting shut down, but it restricts me from helping out friends that need a hand driving extra traffic to their sites (as I cant advertise them, not even for free) and makes me cautious about putting things on here, in case I get banned again by my own stupidity or mistake. This knock on effect, makes me stop before I act, and has stopped me from posting a lot of interesting and humorous articles (well, I think they’d be, I should say crass and offensive)

Never the less, back in January, I promised myself  that I’d pay the $99 yearly fee and level the site up, and at least then I can experiment with any aspect of what goes on here. Trouble is, every time I get any spare cash that ideally would be used for this purpose, it gets eaten away on life stuff, which given my in built practicality, tends to over ride everything.

So, the frustration comes from the fact that if they would let me make some cash so I could pay for the running of the site, then problem solved. But, I can’t, and I’m not risking loosing all the time and energy I have put in here to get it to this stage. Some might think from appearances that it’s fuck all, but while I’m ok at doing this stuff, it has taken me almost 5 years from beginning to now, and at least to me, I’m reasonably proud of how it is now.

I mean, for me at least that is, having a free WP blog, restricts even embedding simple html and site add ons (done for this reason no doubt) so you have to pay the $99 and then they are happy. OK, I’m not against them making money, that’s business, but it’s a cost that I simply has been constantly taken away each time I near it. That is almost like the dream you have about running down the corridor as its end gets further away.

So, I hit upon an idea. For ages, I’ve known about Fiverr, a site that allows you to sell your services beginning at $5 and earn some cash, but never really had the inclination to commit to accepting tons of work it might entail to make it worth the while. I have enough to do, I don’t want to over commit to new stuff unless it is worth doing. Finally, i cracked and thought that, if I got $5 min per gig (thats what they call a job/task there) I would only need to do it 20 times to raise the $99 (well, it’s more if you count they take 20% off you) but the theory is workable.

Only thing is, I have to be careful about the way I promote myself, as if it clashes with the WP TOCs, I’m up shit creek, even though the cash would be used to pay them, i’m forbidden from using the blog to make cash. there’s a fine line I have to walk, and that is more frustration.

I have now hatched a plan, to get this blockage cleared away. The Skulltaliser.

The Skulltaliser is going to be very much in the vein of the old Blue Peter Totaliser from back in the day, a visual reference to a fund raising goal, and over the next few days, it’ll be unveiled. I’ll be putting it proudly at the top of the button menu and updating it as the funds get raised. Knowing my luck,  it’ll be a fail, but I’m British and we are raised to be the underdog, I’ll make it succeed (hopefully)

You’ll see to the side of the page, there’s a shiny new web button advertising my Fiverr services, so please click it and take a look, or click here https://www.fiverr.com/willgrundy to check out what I’m offering, and please share if you know of anyone who may be interested in the gigs I’m offering. I may add new gigs if I can integrate them easily to my overall plans, and sorry to say, in order to get the $99, I’ll be pushing this campaign where ever possible.

Also, I’d ask that if you have ever been entertained, or found some use for this website at any time, please even consider donating via paypal to this cause. Anyone who donates this way, will be included in a scroll of honour under the Skulltaliser and given a shout out and eternal thanks for helping the cause. I can’t embed a paypal donate button (html wont embed for some reason) but if you can help, my paypal address is grun577 (at) aol.com.

I do feel a bit of a scab, doing this, but once the first $99 is done and paid, I have a full year to make the site work for itself, which without restrictions, should easily be done.

Also, if your a company or business that might be interested in sponsoring me with the funds, I would be happy to proudly advertise and so forth (once I have paid the $99 that is) I’d do that for the year in return for the fees, which is pretty cheap for advertising a niche blog such as this (I think the industry standard is something like $10-$20 dollars for a simple text link, so for a good sized prominent reminder in my header logo and more, would be quite a sound investment (hint hint!) So please contact me if you would be interested in that possibility. If things look bleak, I might resort to cup in hand begging and approach suitable companies, which I hope doesn’t come to that, but I will do what it takes to step up my game, some cash flow would allow more stuff to happen here, like an site overhall wouldn’t go amiss, but that’d take me getting some web person in and sorting it, which also involves cash injection, which is my next point…

I’d add that in the event that funds exceed the $99 goal, then all extra will be put in for additional web services to enhance the site, I’d be up for community suggestions, and may do some polls to ask you lot where you think I should go (if things go that way)

So if your still reading, then please, even if you can’t donate, or afford to hire my fiverr services, you can still help me by sharing this article (and subsequent ones about it) on any platforms you use that could get this done. Use the sharing buttons below this post to share, if you know me on FB, Linkedin, Twitter or whatever, please be my Obi-Wan and help me. I don’t ask for help in achieving my goals usually, but think it’s about time the site was allowed to evolve.

I’ll keep you all informed each step of the way, after all, I’d like to see us as a community, almost family, and going forward, I hope to repay each and everyone of you who have been part of this journey so far, with putting the site in the heart of our community and provide resources, info and help to others who might need it (Am I laying this on too thick? Just tell me, yeah, could be a bit too much…)

Seriously though, please think on what I’ve said in this rant, and I welcome all comments, suggestions, messages and support that you think will help!

I fucking love you people!!

4xD: Question?: To video, or not to video?

I’ve given this some time to think over. While I sit here writing the next Dungeons of doom article (Honestly, it’ll be coming in the next day or so!) Anyway, I digress, and I’ll get on with my point.

Up till now, I’ve been armed with this blog, my camera and my dry (and often shit) wit. However, this Chrimbo I got a decent enough video cam.

I reckoned it may have been time, at least to attempt to bring some extra dimension to this site from time to time, adding some video tutorials, some makes, tips and suggestions, and possibly a rant or two along the way.

But, it isn’t all without some trepidation. I have a solid style here on the website, and it is something that I would like to continue even in video form, matching in both visual and content, I just left me to wonder if I’m ready…

I mean, I’m pretty sure that given enough effort I could churn out some fine video content, all well integrated in terms of my desired style and fit, but to become a media star (albeit a z-lister at the most) I’m not so sure that I’m 100% ready for that kind of shit. To be perfectly honest, even though I have a bazillion ideas for Grinning Skull related video content, I’m convinced that even with all the best intentions, for now at least, that part of the interactivity here, won’t be for a while. I mean, would any of you even want to see it?

Can I not get across what I feel I need to articulate in a blog post, that I could in a video? I think until I’m fully committed to putting everything into such endeavors, I should remain as I am. I’m not going to rule out if I ever get any sudden inspiration to do it, hell, I even have some stuff done like a couple of vids and titles etc,  just don’t expect me to release anything yet, well not unless I’m really happy with the end result.

Plus my PC is not in the best of conditions to be rendering huge chunks of HD footage (trust me, it’s not good even with the most basic of tasks!)

Anyway, let me know your thoughts in the comments what do you think? Would you welcome the inclusion of video content here? Are you ready to hear the dulcet tones of my northern accent? Only the viewer can decide….

Catch you all later…

4xD: Paint it grey; The Monotone Monologue

DSCF2203

Now, there must be some of you out there thinking to yourselves that I seem to favour the colour grey quite a bit. Maybe it may be a subliminal reflection upon myself and my psyche, but there is method in my madness.

Sure, I have to admit that a great deal of my terrain work features the colour, but I think it is reflective of the world around us. Grey surrounds us in the form of natural rocks, the cloudy skies, the urban tarmac below our feet, and of course, the endless municipal 20th century buildings and dwellings we seem to have in the western world. As depressing as it sounds, grey is everywhere.

St Georges Minster Doncaster: One of my towns local landmarks. For as much as it’s beautiful architecture, it’s pretty darn grey!

Ok, so where is the colour? Why should this real life dredge apply so much to terrain building and my stuff primarily when I have all the colours in the world to deal with in these imaginary worlds that I can create?

The grey monotony of the stark and austere dungeon terrain is broken by the colour of the individual figures and models.

As much as I like garish and bright colours, I believe that terrain should not just look pretty on the table, but should reflect the world imagined around them. More importantly, since I’m dealing with miniatures, as much as I want my terrain to shine, it’s them that are the primary accent of colour on the table, the battlefield and terrain are secondary. I feel that everything else should be muted, that way the focus is on the action and the models, and making sure that the figures are not lost in a blur of colour. Monochrome terrain helps the colourful figures pop and stand out from the scenics. Now I’m not saying that everything should be grey on the table, but my preference allows for highlights that draw the eye, not to bombard the eye with far too much busy colour that might not be needed unless it’s really called for, hence making the important figures and objectives the centre of attention.

Grey everywhere, yet the lone blue creature stands out from the scene.

Now this is just my own opinion, but I much prefer this to overtly busy and incorrectly used colour palettes. I would however like to know your thoughts. Do you think that I’m talking bull? or do you think there is some truth to this?

Whatever your opinions, let me know in the comments section and give your side!

GW’s Age of Sigmar. Should I give a sh*t about it?

20 Aug

60010299006_WHAgeofSigmarBoxENG01

So the old Warhammer is gone. Replaced by GW‘s latest brainfart, Age of Sigmar. As an oldhammer player and veteran since 2nd Edition WFB, I’m not sure how to take it. Of course, this effects nothing in terms of playing WFB, I’ll still be able to play, but this new direction GW has taken, leaves me a bit undecided about this new release.

I’ve read tons about it on line, with mixed reviews that usually end up as “meh”, and comparisons to sigmar’s lot being more 40K than Warhammer fantasy. It makes me wonder if it’s not the fault of the game, but rather us old guard making all the noise.

It’s a brave departure for GW to be giving away the rules free, we warhammer players can jump straight in and play no problem (I will, at some point) but on the other hand, I can see their move being a canny conversion tool, designed to suck in existing players to the new stuff. I just think I’m not excited about it at all.

I’m old skool, I was brought up with GWs products and minis, they played a large role in my childhood and beyond, but I’m not crying about how it used to be, but maybe we hold this old period of gaming history in too high esteem. I’m not saying that WFB is the best wargaming system to ever grace this planet, sure it’s ok, but, I think we older gamers are just used to it. We have become set in our ways and hold Warhammer on a pedestal.

On the reverse, there are some things with Age of Sigmar (AoS) that don’t float my boat. don’t get me wrong, I’m still tempted to get the boxed set, who wouldn’t be. Everyone likes loads of miniatures. I just have some issues with the models themselves.

dfhjk

The Stormcast Eternals are my main gripe. I’m mixed about these. Even so years ago there were always going to be a celestial element versus chaos (ala the eternal champion influences from the early days) it had never panned out until now (only the chaos bit was expanded) The forces of order here, are a bit underwhelming, and far too space marine like for my liking. They are ok, but lack some oommff (So to speak)

Alternatively, if Sigmar is developed as a force, does this mean we’ll get some other new forces to represent the other lawful gods of the warhammer pantheon in a similar style? It’s possible, and could potentially create some really cool stuff.

The Khorne stuff in the box is ok, with a few good models and the rest sort of not. Again the similarities to 40k are apparent to me, so maybe this is trying to appeal to 40k players more than the rest. Since the 40k game is way more popular than WFB ever was, its a shrewd marketing move for them to do this, yeah I get it. Its just starting to feel like the warhammer fantasy flavour is from whats bolted on (like you can use your WFB armies and play it now with the free rules) Warhammer and all the miniatures from the previous incarnation, seems like its only now an afterthought to keep loyal WFB players who game in store, happy and subdued.

age-of-sigmar-starter-box-17

Just how does this guy manage to wipe his ass?

Also, some of the Khorne stuff seems a bit too S&M slannesh to me. Am I missing something, or is it just me?

I dunno, what it is with this, i’m in two minds. On one hand, this could be good eventually, and getting onboard with the game would be good. There’s a lot of great models coming out, and even though I’m not a fan of the prices GW charge, I’d buy a few bits (the rest from cheaper decent manufacturers!) but, on the other hand, it could be a fail and not interest me enough to play with the game, only to return to WFB or kings of war etc. At least the rules are free. Jesus, you could just play the game without the boxed set and play with whatever minis you like!

With my time, concentration and funds limited, I can’t make my mind up about it.

Please, share your thoughts, do you like it? have you played it? what do you think?
