Crowdfunding Spotlight: Bio Syndrome Kickstarter

5 Feb

Everyone likes something for free? Right? Well, I’d like to draw your attention to this KS for the Biosyndrome skirmish rules.

For those who don’t already know anything about BioSyndrome, it’s a currently free set of skirmish wargaming rules, of which allows you to use what ever 28mm miniatures you like to have a game with. It’s geared toward the zombie/modern/post apoc setting, but there are rules and plans afoot to allow adaption to the fantasy genre within the system. It’s a game that I’ve been planning to give a try out using my 15mm zombie stuff, but haven’t yet had time. I do own a PDF copy and from first impressions it looks ok, plus it’s free,  so that’s a bonus! I do like the idea of the fantasy version, so that might be worth me having a bash too, afterall, what’s not to like about a free zombie wargame?!

So why run a Kickstarter for something that’s free? I hear you ask? Well, the game will remain free, but this is for a high quality colour digital version of the rules, plus additional material in digital format.

With the project being fully funded now, it looks as if the book and site will become reality, but there’s still plenty of time to get in on this for yourself if you’d like to back this campaign, go and check the game out (plus you can get the free PDF rules too!)

Project Brainstorming: Dynasty Warriors 15mm; Can it be done?

28 Jan

dynastywarrior15mm

So, this year I have quite a few ideas for new settings for my wargaming projects, since this is 2014 , I thought I’d get the ball rolling and start getting my arse into gear sorting my lists of aquisitions in order, and to see if these plans are going to be doo-able within my meagre wargaming budget.

First up is Dynasty warriors 15mm. I friggin’ love Dynasty warriors on everything from the Playstation 2, right up to the 360, and I

actually possess most of them on many platforms. I couldn’t tell you how many hours I have spent over the years playing games in this series, I honestly never bore of it. Some of you will know what I’m on about, but for those of you who don’t know, the game is focused around a plot based around ancient chinese history, with the warring states of Wei, Shu, and Wu. It’s all done in a great over the top, semi mystical cinematic style. It has all the special moves and characters, and bags and bags of playablity (check it out if your not familiar with it, it’s good!)

I’m not saying I understand everything about it, nor can I pronounce many names correctly from it, but the gameplay is solid and very much a skirmish type wargame, so that was what gave me the idea in the first place. It seems a little overwhelming at first, but once you get into it, your hooked.( Well, I am anyway!) I really want to get playing the new online version, but my web access is limited as regards bandwith, and I don’t have a great reliable connection, so consoles are my way of getting a fix.

But, now I fancy the idea of doing the game in some limited form, but in 15mm wargaming. Could this be done? How to achieve it. Ok, so it might not be anything new, could be that it’s been tried before, but that’s why I’m brainstorming it here first, I want to throw this out there, along with all the info I find out about it, so if you think you’d ever want to do the same, you lot would have some useful links and such! I’m that kind me! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to enact the whole game, just a game based around the computer game, it’s a mass war battle game, so it’ll translate pretty easy I reckon.

Right, my first considerations are the figures, which’s bad if I can’t find enough of a close enough match for the figures I need, so i’ll kick this idea into touch and plan something else. I think the good thing here is that much of what i am going to need will be (should be) available from the many varied historical miniature companies, so that’ll be a bonus. Terrain won’t be a problem either, I’ll use scratch builds (generic eastern fantasy type stuff will do) or paper models, and maybe buy a couple of really nice bits if it’s available.

Also, I’m going to need a ruleset to use, or adapt. I haven’t got there yet, but if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

So, at this point, I have a short list of manufacturers ranges that might fit, some more than others, but I’m hoping that there’s a whole load of extra bits that I can get from other places and different makers of 15mm, I might get away with some generic fantasy stuff, or some japanese historical odds and sods? Again I’d like to throw it out there, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.

Here’s the list:

So, in that lot, I’m sure I’m going to find some pretty good matches, some not so. That’s as far as I am at the moment, I’m just looking for my basic troop types, pretty plain, armed with usual weaponry and a few different armour tyes. I do know that there are some dead ringers in there regarding this, so it’s looking positive (I’ll highlight them a little later)

So, if you know of anything that might help me with the plan, I’d be greatly indebted to you, and of course I’d share your efforts with everyone here.

Right, more stuff to do…..Maybe a game of Dynasty warriors 6, perhaps….

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Magmod Scenics’ Fortified Farmstead Kickstarter

21 Dec

I do like terrain and scenics for wargaming possibly more than any other aspect of wargaming, and I can really appreciate a good set piece on the gaming table like this KS from Magmod Scenics, their fortified dark age farmstead, thats running right now.

Things like this make me want to create whole new projects around these lovely looking resin terrain bits and accessories. Even so they are really designed to be used for historical gaming, I can’t help but think there’s a whole lot of potential other than that in other genres. My Oggum would be right at home with these buildings, how they are back to basics and made from the oggam staple of bricks, sticks and straw!

Also, what I like about this is the various accessory add ons, which will add more interest on the table, and again be very useful in a plethora of other games. This is Magmod Scenics first kickstarter offering, and personally I think they are on for a winner, with some nice options for snap on magnetic parts for damaged and burnt rooftops and haybails, providing the project hits their stretchgoals (although it’s not clear what these are exactly)

Nice stuff for their maiden effort, I do hope that Magmod are a name that we’ll come to know well for their scenics in the future. Good luck guys!

If they look like something you’d like your Celts or Romans fighting over, check out the project page for a closer look!

Crowdfunding Spotlight: GamerGauge Kickstarter

19 Dec

I wanted to point out this KS, as I know there’ll be loads of you out there that this is going to interest.

This is the GamerGuage, a distance measuring system for wargaming that gets rid of the reliance for using the tape measure most of the time. The key to this, is the whole simplicity of it, reminding me of the measuring sticks that were used yesteryear, all be it on a smaller (inch) scale. Whilst not entirely groundbreaking, it is perfect for those smaller tight in encounters, where a tape measure is just a lot of faff!

You know there’s a lot of talk that Kickstarter is dragging it’s feet now, and that it’s become no more than a glorified pre-order system, but I don’t think that’s true at all.

Indeed there are some utterly atrocious and just plain bad stuff on there, just a good look under the surface of the dross, there indeed is plenty of gems still there. You just have to look.

Check out the project page to see if you’d like to get in on the act!

10mm Zombies now available from Pendraken!

24 Sep

Finally it’s time to start zombie wargaming in a new scale, yes Pendraken have released the new scifi revamps, which includes the much anticipated zombies and survivors!

Now I just need to start thinking about making some appropriate scenery in 10mm and getting some of these bad boys! If you don’t wargame the apocolypse, then I forsee this could be an ideal low cost way to get into the genre, especially as they are cheap as chips!! Ok, so it’s not 15mm (Like I harp on about all the time) but it is still zombies, so all is forgiven!! As for a ruleset, most would work with a bit of jiggling around, but I’d recommend USE ME ZOMBIE DAWN ( as it’s the one I play) You can read my review here if you want to take a look!

SFZ1 walking zombies (10) £1.80

SFZ2 standing zombies (10) £1.80

SFZ3 crawling zombies £1.80

SFZ4 female zombies and child

SFZ5 zombie dogs (5) £1,00

SFZ6 survivors (30) £5.00

Also there is an army/bundle available if you want to start 10mm zombie gaming, for the great price of £13 for 60 assorted zombies and dogs, and 25 survivors, thats plenty if you plan on skirmish gaming with them, you might need a few more if you want to base them in multiples and go all guns for sheer numbers!

Check out the zombies on the Pendraken website http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Sci-Fi-c24/Zombies-sc294/

Another great figure released in the scifi revamp is this Grey alien, as usual I see the implications in 15mm gaming, and I think at 12mm high he’d make great minions for the whole plethora of greys already available from lots of 15mm  manufacturers. Unarmed civilians, technical personel and so on can all be achieved with this figure, I know I’ll be getting a pack of these too on my next order to join my small advance force of greys (plus death ray UFO) If you really have to use them in 10mm scale gaming (god forbid! :)) they’d be cool for that too, and much of the 15mm stuff like saucers and drones will work equally well too!

You’ll find all the new released Scifi stuff, as well as the old stuff (don’t forget the civilian figures from the old range, they will do fine for extra citizens in any zombie or UFO invasion!) over on the Pendraken website http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Sci-Fi-c24/

Cheque now please Leon!!

Ciao!
