GW’s Age of Sigmar. Should I give a sh*t about it?

20 Aug

So the old Warhammer is gone. Replaced by GW‘s latest brainfart, Age of Sigmar. As an oldhammer player and veteran since 2nd Edition WFB, I’m not sure how to take it. Of course, this effects nothing in terms of playing WFB, I’ll still be able to play, but this new direction GW has taken, leaves me a bit undecided about this new release.

I’ve read tons about it on line, with mixed reviews that usually end up as “meh”, and comparisons to sigmar’s lot being more 40K than Warhammer fantasy. It makes me wonder if it’s not the fault of the game, but rather us old guard making all the noise.

It’s a brave departure for GW to be giving away the rules free, we warhammer players can jump straight in and play no problem (I will, at some point) but on the other hand, I can see their move being a canny conversion tool, designed to suck in existing players to the new stuff. I just think I’m not excited about it at all.

I’m old skool, I was brought up with GWs products and minis, they played a large role in my childhood and beyond, but I’m not crying about how it used to be, but maybe we hold this old period of gaming history in too high esteem. I’m not saying that WFB is the best wargaming system to ever grace this planet, sure it’s ok, but, I think we older gamers are just used to it. We have become set in our ways and hold Warhammer on a pedestal.

On the reverse, there are some things with Age of Sigmar (AoS) that don’t float my boat. don’t get me wrong, I’m still tempted to get the boxed set, who wouldn’t be. Everyone likes loads of miniatures. I just have some issues with the models themselves.

The Stormcast Eternals are my main gripe. I’m mixed about these. Even so years ago there were always going to be a celestial element versus chaos (ala the eternal champion influences from the early days) it had never panned out until now (only the chaos bit was expanded) The forces of order here, are a bit underwhelming, and far too space marine like for my liking. They are ok, but lack some oommff (So to speak)

Alternatively, if Sigmar is developed as a force, does this mean we’ll get some other new forces to represent the other lawful gods of the warhammer pantheon in a similar style? It’s possible, and could potentially create some really cool stuff.

The Khorne stuff in the box is ok, with a few good models and the rest sort of not. Again the similarities to 40k are apparent to me, so maybe this is trying to appeal to 40k players more than the rest. Since the 40k game is way more popular than WFB ever was, its a shrewd marketing move for them to do this, yeah I get it. Its just starting to feel like the warhammer fantasy flavour is from whats bolted on (like you can use your WFB armies and play it now with the free rules) Warhammer and all the miniatures from the previous incarnation, seems like its only now an afterthought to keep loyal WFB players who game in store, happy and subdued.

Just how does this guy manage to wipe his ass?

Also, some of the Khorne stuff seems a bit too S&M slannesh to me. Am I missing something, or is it just me?

I dunno, what it is with this, i’m in two minds. On one hand, this could be good eventually, and getting onboard with the game would be good. There’s a lot of great models coming out, and even though I’m not a fan of the prices GW charge, I’d buy a few bits (the rest from cheaper decent manufacturers!) but, on the other hand, it could be a fail and not interest me enough to play with the game, only to return to WFB or kings of war etc. At least the rules are free. Jesus, you could just play the game without the boxed set and play with whatever minis you like!

With my time, concentration and funds limited, I can’t make my mind up about it.

Please, share your thoughts, do you like it? have you played it? what do you think?

15mm Space Orcs: More and more…

4 Apr

Well, I’ll start by wishing all those reading, a happy easter, hope you enjoy your choccy eggs!

I thought I would start todays blog updates with some extra shots of my 15mm space orc army. If you saw the last post, that just detailed what I had finished thus far. This time, I want to show you the rest of the other bits, although some aint finished, I thought it would be a nice touch to see what my force is growing into.

DSCF3902

First you’ll notice the addition of feral goblins, while these fellers are primarily used for my WFB snotlings, I see no reason not to include them in my space orc forces. They’ll just be a vicious mob of skirmishing cannon fodder, designed to tie up more deadly enemy units, while my other units take care of business. I have so many 15mm goblins lying around, I might have to develop a fantasy version of the goblinoid lot.

Next up is vehicles. These are a work in progress. I’ve got anothe wartruck, based on a toy 4×4 monster truck. I think it’ll be suitably over the top, and a nice fit with the other. Loads of work to do on it before its done.

Next up is an assault dropship, which is made from allsorts of bits. It did start as another project ages ago, which lay dormant in favour of other things. Fast forward to recent times, I decided to repurpose the original and add more bits (and I’ll probably add more) With these, its starting to feel like an invasion.

Loads of things to be done on that, but it’ll come together eventually. Bear in mind as well that I have tons of orcs to paint up, drednaughts, runts and bits. Its probably time to think about what I should be doing to put an opposing force together. I do have a not-tyranid-ish force on the back burner, but I think I might have to try either an imperial force or a chaos one…or squats…or genestealer cult..or….!!

The Star Wars-Games Workshop Mashup? Is there any truth to the rumour?

4 Feb

gwSW

If you haven’t been living in a cave on Dagobah for the last year or so, you’ll know that Disney/Lucasfilm movie machine is now kicked into gear. The Force Awakens (also known as Episode VII) is set for a 15th of December 2015 release at the cinemas. Great news for Star Wars fans, eager to see the continuing adventures of Luke, and his space chums, even better news for Wargamers if the hushed rumours on the net end up being true.

I’ve been hearing bits about the possibility of Games Workshop getting the license to produce a miniature wargame about said franchise. So how much truth is there to the myth?

West End Games' Star Wars Miniatures Battles game.

West End Games’ Star Wars Miniatures Battles game.

I think if it happened, it would lure me back (even at their prices) as well as a lot of others too. I can imagine some pretty nice tasty miniatures coming out, even just from a collectors view they’d get loads of sales. I’m not saying it’s not been done before, remember back in the day WEGs skirmish game and the excellent 25mm Grenadier miniatures (plus Fantasy Flights X-Wing & Imperial assault, WOTCs collectable mini game too) but I do think GW would make some lovely stuff for it. They’d probably use their usual rules no doubt, or some iteration of, but that’s GW for you.

Imperial Assault

With Disney now the proud owners of all things SW, lets remember that they invested over £4 Billion, money they will want returns on. A lot of that cash will come from licencing the shit out of the franchise, so you’ll end up seeing literally everything you can stick a logo on, being branded with Star Wars. From what I’ve read, there will be so much new official movies, TV, cartoons, comics, books and games adding to the canon, it seems they have huge plans to milk the fuck out of it, every last drop from chewbaccas tit (so to speak)

So, yeah, I’ve heard bits about there was some possibility of GW getting a license, but it all seems to be hush hush. I know that from time to time, people from GW pass this way, so they are quite welcome to get in touch with me (confidentially if need be) and send me a little tidbit of info, in fact if anyone could corroborate this rumour, I’d be happy to know. I know I can get on the hate wagon for GW sometimes, but it’s just the GW of today is not the GW we have now (blah, blah blah, back in the 80’s etc etc…) I would show some love for them if this is true (although I’m not putting any stock into it) I’d also cream my pants if it were to be released in 15mm….

Kylo Ren and his controversial lightsaber.

The Force Awakens Kylo Ren and his controversial lightsaber.

Say, even if they did, the success of the new movie would directly affect the success of the game. There’s no guarantee that Episode 7 will be any good. Sure it’s got the oldies (I think I’m ok with Luke doing the Jedi master obi wan thing, but the others meh…) but it might end up being panned for not living up to the hype, I don’t think that’d do a potential GW game too good. Still, it is Star Wars (It’s a game of swings and roundabouts) but we’re going to have to see what JJ Abrams can do.

As ever, if you have something to add on this subject, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it, or if you actually know anything for sure, please get in touch via the comments section here or via the contact page.

May the Force be with you!!

The Lead Pile. (And the question of how to tackle it!)

3 Feb

DSCF3787

Jeezus! I’m feeling slightly overwhelmed when it comes to dealing with my lead mountain. I have started to take stock of just exactly how much stuff I have accumulated and what you can see in the picture is just the tip of the iceberg. This toolbox here is just one of the various stashes of unpainted lead (and stuff that needs stripping or repainting) Plastic is another thing, there’s mostly metal miniatures in my alloy hills. I really didn’t quite understand just the volume I had until I started looking.

DSCF3790

My question really is, just how exactly do you deal with it? I’ve been having a rekindled relationship with miniature painting, so if it wasn’t enough to just decide what to paint up next, I’m thinking now about what the hell I’ve got!

I know I’m not alone in this. But why do we do it? This shiny syndrome must be put in check, but we still do it over and over with stuff we don’t need, nor ever will probably paint. I’m not saying that we don’t want the things, we do want them, and want is the optimum word here. It’s as if we are as the dwarven kings or dragons themselves, hoarding them in our deep caverns.

DSCF3788

Some might say that I should be happy that I have a choice, and I’ll agree. The only thing is I’m never ever going to get every single one of them painted. Ever. Sure, I’ll manage to do a lot if I put in some time (a long time) and effort, but theres never going to be an end in sight. I wouldn’t mind so much, but I have only come back to the hobby for the last 5 years or so (God knows what it would be like if I’d have kept going interrupted from back in the day) I’m even more confused about what I’m going to paint up and put in the queue next, just cause there’s so much to go through. I think its a battle I’m never going to win. I know I will amass more and more beyond what is a copeable  and realistic amount to have. Even when I sell vast chunks on, it still keeps growing.

DSCF3791

Dozens of manufacturers and scales, fantasy, historical, scifi, you know the score. I have no idea why I bought some of it. Is it lead fumes that make us do it? Consumer greed driven by the very limited nature of the number of castings? It makes you wonder what our true motivations are for this collecting of this pile of tiny metallic creatures? I have no real answer, just that I love the little fuckers, and if you can empathise with my condition, then you love them little fuckers too!

Right, what next then?…

A bit of painting does you good!

31 May

DSCF3563

I’ve been trying to fit in some miniature painting over this last week, I admit that it’s been ages since I’ve had time to get some colours on any of my miniatures, so with a bit of inspiration from my lead haul I attained from triples a few weeks ago, I thought it was about time I at least kept my hand in it. (I’ll be posting a belated triples review later…)

As you can see, these weird beasties are thhe start of my 15mm version of my 40k tyranid swarm. So, I know there isn’t any 15mm tyranid stuff, let alone anything in 15mm for 40k, but since there are many great hobbyists creating fantastic 15mm versions of warhammer 40,000 stuff on the net, they too have been my muse to try it for myself.

While the above may not be 100% acurate renditions of the tyranids, I’ve tried to get stuff that is near enough for me. You’ll notice there are some cracking Pendraken worms, alien creatures and a queen that fit nicely with the theme, as well as Darkest star miniatures skyth war beasts that serve well as my primes and hive tyrants. Even a classic kryomek helion which I bagged from the bring and buy stalls makes a good carnifex type stand in. To unify the tyranid feel, I’ve got some GW tyranid rippers too, whilst not that intimidating in 28mm, they make great tyranid beasts in 15mm.

I decided on a “spiderman” colour scheme for them after seeing similar on the net, its bright and stands out, as well as tying the whole lot together. The pic is just a few of the swarm, and I did them to just see if the idea would work as a force, which I think does.

DSCF3539

Next up is the first bit of the opposition, my Orcs. Although I have only two actual foot figures done (3 if you count the tiny gobbo gunner here) my warbus is looking swell! I have still some work to go yet, but I’d say its 80% done and will serve my “Brass Crabz” warband well!

DSCF3534

DSCF3533

I am a long way from finishing any of the two sides, but hopefully I’ll try and find the time in between jobs to carry on. I’m planning a genestealer cult army after these and maybe some other 40k themed forces too. Next I’ll be showing you the squiggoth that i’m painting (it’s a great scotia grendel kev adams warbeast I had knocking around) it too is coming on a treat with all the added bells and whistles.

Right, I suppose I’d better get back to sculpting and modelling, so many distractions….
