Grinning Skull Miniatures: Little Killa Clowns!

3 Nov

So, it’s been a while since the Grinning Skull Miniature line has had any new additions, but fear not, in true honour of Pennywise the Dancing Clown and all things Halloween,  we have some lovely little murder dwarves to use in your miniature based games!

These diminutive and horrible harlequins are suitable for either 15mm, 20mm and 28/32mm gaming, and in true Grinning Skull style have both a humorous and sinister edge to them! Available as a pack of 10 (GRNP06) for £9.00, or as singles too.

As ever, these little terrors are brought to you by our good friends at Alternative Armies, premier purveyors of perfectly packaged pewter playing pieces (whew! try saying that over and over!) and you can find these little fellers’ along with the rest of the Grinning Skull Miniature range here: https://www.alternative-armies.com/collections/grinning-skull-miniatures/products/grnp06-little-killa-clowns-pack-and-singles

Also, if you’re a fan of Grinning Skull miniature strangeness, please keep your eyes peeled for new releases coming soon in the range, trust me when I say that amongst them will be that which a lot of you have been asking me about for years now, no spoilers, but those who’ve asked me will know exactly what they are!

As ever, let me know your thoughts on these and the range, I’d love to hear what game you’d use them in, how you’ve painted them and what other stuff you think would be a great idea to add to the growing range!!!

Busy, Busy, Busy… Lost down the rabbit hole at Grinning Skull Towers…

3 Nov

Busy, Busy, Busy…

Well, as you can imagine, my lack of presence here posting means I’ve been busy and somewhat distracted with all sorts of things of late. Things have been happening that have meant I haven’t had the chance to update the site as much as I’d have liked to.

I’d have liked to put more on here, such as updates and such (and yes, I do have stuff to tell you about!) but organisation isn’t my greatest strong point, so I’ll be posting some catch-up stuff shortly, which I hope some of you will be interested in. Also I’d like to point out that of late the posts that I have been putting out, have to me at least, seem to have been a little salesy-spammy which is something I don’t like to do here that much, I feel that while it’s important to update online current Grinning Skull related merch and releases, good content is king, so loads of adverts don’t sit well and I’d much prefer to put out some articles that I feel that you lot would appreciate and get something out of.

Of course, I’m going to have to advertise my shit, but I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m becoming the metorphorical Jehovas Witness of the hobby world, that annoying twat who’s always flogging their brand of gaming religion to everyone who clearly ain’t listening! It’s a balancing act that is getting more difficult to do, as you appreciate things like Grim’s Dungeons of Doom tutorials take some time and planning to get sorted, so other stuff on the content creation side gets priority over free stuff. that’s not to say that I won’t be posting articles like that, on the contrary, I’m planning right now a new series of tutorials to coincide with my forays into my lot playing Osprey’s Rogue Stars, something which I’m lacking a table full of 28mm Sci-fi scenery and painted models, which need to be done for us to play. Sci-fi terrain making is my preferred theme (as you might have guessed by the 15mm stuff I’ve done on here) but I’m guessing that this will appeal to the 40k crowd as well as other 28mm sci-fi gamers too.

Also, I’m planning a PDF digest or two of “Grim’s Dungeons of Doom” material from the articles already published. I’ll be cleaning it up, adding new bits, articles and pics and collating it in a nice ebook format for download over on our various DriveThruRPG, RPGnow and Wargamevault publisher store pages, and possibly a limited print copy run if there’s a few who are interested.

On the Grinning Skull Miniatures front, there’s also stuff going on, and some of you might know new releases are afoot, last month saw the Little Killa clowns released from Alternative Armies. We are also gearing up for more new releases in the line, B.E.A.R.S., Klorzid mutant plants, more Zarglian Invaders are forthcoming, so expect to see more about these in the near future. Also, whilst I haven’t had much opportunity to get some sculpting done due to time commitments, that is not to say my ideas are dead in the water, and I have a whole heap of mad ideas for other models in the line, and also some more traditional miniatures I’d like to pump out in some way shape or form. The Grinning Skull miniature line was always intended to push the envelope with unusual and weird models that are not seen anywhere else, so expect more in the way of my bizarre brainfarts. Things like Giant Killer babies, Alien Starship crews, genetically modified sentient fruit and veg, plus more additions to the Zarglian Empire, Evil X-TED teddies, malfunctioning robotic psychos, more killer clowns & Circus freaks, more alien monsters and maybe a few Chukk and Oggum too!

Also, I’d like to turn my hand to some more traditional fantasy miniatures, since the Grinning Skull line is more Sci-fi weirdness, I’d like to get some of my trademark stylings into my own interpretation of the usual fantasy fare. I have tons of concept sketches and notes for things like Trolls, Goblins, and some of my own inventions I’ve come up with.
Grimlins (a imp-like race of demonic creatures), Trolkyn (Small troll related infantry that would serve as Goblin and Orc Proxies) and Monstaaz (Comedy demonesque minion critters that would serve as cannon fodder in chaos or demon armies) Couple these with a load of big beasties, Trolls, Ogres, Giants, Minotaurs, and a whole heap of my interpretations of creatures, and you have what I’d like to call something like “Fantasical Freaks” or “Brain Damage” Miniatures, a separate line from Grinning Skull Minis, but how long it’ll be before these ideas will materialise into the real world is unknown as yet, but it’s part of my long-term plan. Maybe these will figure in a future Kickstarter or Indiegogo crowdfunder, although this time it’ll be better planned and executed!

However, ideas are one thing, doing the legwork or simply having time and resources to bring these into the flesh are another. I’m resonably confident 95% or more of these will see the light of day, that is providing new things don’t take precedence over them or I kick the bucket, or something strange happens (Alien abduction, trapped in a mirror realm, dimensional wormhole, lost in a prehistoric world etc.)

On top of all this, we’ll be ploughing ahead with more PDF releases as usual, as we head to almost 200 titles, I want to celebrate this milestone, with something special around the new year (Got a few ideas, but you’ll have to wait) and plans for more to come in 2018, plus I want to see if we can get to 400 before 2018 is out!!

As ever, I welcome your comments, ideas, feedback, and thoughts, plus I’m always up for collabs and such like projects if you’re interested in stuff like that!

Next up will be an October End of the month round-up, plus More Grinning Skull Miniatures stuff.

Grinning Skull Miniatures: B.E.A.R.S. Greens sneak peek!

20 Oct

dftgyhjk

Here’s a quick sneak peek at some of the latest greens for Grinning Skull’s B.E.A.R.S in the range. Yes, you heard right, I’m adding teddy bears with guns to the mix. Why? Why not!?

For me, miniatures and gaming is supposed to be fun, and with so much serious stuff already out there I guess there needs to be more comic relief, so I decided to create these fun figures. Apparently, teddies are quite popular for collectors and such, so I thought I’d make some gaming versions that have a decidedly “Grinning Skull asthetic”

oiuytrdcfvhbjk

In a nutshell, The B.E.A.R.S (Bio Engineered Advanced Ranger Squad) are an artificial race of teddies, created by the great Toymaster entity for his endless amusement. Subsequently these bears went rogue and escaped from their maker to dispense justice and help throughout the Carnage Continuum to those in need. Outraged at this betrayal, the Cosmic Toymaster created their opposite (eX-T.E.D.) to hunt down and destroy his rogue children and cause chaos throughout the galaxy!

The first  eX-T.E.D. bunch are forthcoming, and will feature an array of evil versions on the theme (Led by Dr. Strangefluff and his cohorts) Hopefully if popular there will be additional bears on each side, influenced by popular tropes from all sorts of things (superhero, scifi, fantasy, cartoon and movies etc)

I’ll admit, I’ve been sidetracked lately, but I’m almost finished with this set, just got a couple more eX-T.E.D. figures to go, but I’ll show off them soon.

I’ll show more from the new bunch later, but safe to say, it’s not just teddies in the mix. Additions to the Zarglian Invaders and introducing the sentient mutant plants, the Klorzids.

As ever I welcome comments, thoughts and suggestions, let me know how you think.

4xD: But hey Mr Grim, I wanna’ game my dungeon in 15mm….

5 Oct

DDDDD

So, outside of the Grim’s Dungeons of Doom tutorials, I think I needed to have yet another sub-set of brain fart articles to cover other aspects from time to time, so here is 4xD (which stands for Dungeon developments, discourse and dialogue) in which i’ll be babbling on about my gameworld Plexus (which I wouldn’t mind developing into something cool) as well as future dungeons of doom related PDFs I’m making, and other similar themed stuff I’m planning that doesn’t fit into the main articles.

Today I want to address 15mm dungeons and just how we can adapt these techniques to suit that scale rather than the usual 28mm.

To be honest, I mainly game in 15mm and not 28mm, unless it’s WFB I don’t really have any minis in that size beyond that, so when I began this, I seriously considered going 15mm as well. I do have quite a few 15mm fantasy adventurers, but were lacking on monsters, so it was kind of a reversed 28mm situation (Where as I have plenty of monsters, yet hardly any adventurers) What swung the decision in the end was the sheer scope and availability of fantasy minis in the scale, otherwise I’d have gone smaller just for space saving.

Anyway, but just how many of these techniques I’ve been detailing? So enough of my rambling, and lets shift scale.

DSCF5200

DUNGEON FLOORS- There is absolutely no reason why the exact same technique can’t be used. Other textured  paper is available with smaller mosaic squares that would be more akin to 15mm flagstones but I don’t see why the same dungeon flooring could not be used. Another idea would be to acquire some nice cheap or free floorplans in PDF form and shrink them down 50%-65%

DSCF5344

WALL SECTIONS- The same goes with the wall sections, only with slight modification. I would recommend that the only thing that i’d do different is when detailing the texture with card block designs, is that they would scale more if the brick design was shrunk by half. Ok, this would take a little longer, but not that much. Some might also prefer to use a smaller dimension of wood pieces, although I think that this would not be essential. If you don’t want the wood method for your dungeon, consider getting some dungeon building paperkit PDFs and shrinking them by the same percent as the flooring, or for free on the web. There are a good selection that would fit on this site, check the Resources section for lists of free 3D dungeons and similar.

DOORS– The chunky doors are easily done by simply shrinking the door size down only and keeping the rest of the building as is, also don’t forget that 15mm can be found for sale by several mini companies, so that’s an option too without much outlay. Opening doors like in the article are still do-able but a little fiddly, as with anything if you shrink the size. Maybe if there’s a call for it, i’ll do a tutorial for it, however you’ll nee to let me know if thats what you want!

DSCF5537

FURNITURE- It’s very difficult to get the same level of detail that you get at 28mm, but not impossible either. If you aren’t ready to micro the techniques I’ve been going on about, you can always buy the dressings in from mini companies if you look around, although this can be hit and miss. Making stuff yourself helps eradicate the frustration factor with buying, only to replace it with more frustration building it! But, hold on, there need be no angst if you think carefully. Beds are easily sorted by shrinking the sizes (use 1 lolly stick wide for single beds, 2 for double beds etc) tables, again shorten the lengths and widths (use thick card as an alternative if it makes it easier) Shelves are something more intricate, swap lolly sticks for thick card, use smaller beads and adornment, sure it’s tricky, but not hard to do. For the books on the shelves, use thinner card too for scale. Books can also be made from the books & scrolls PDF, by printing the kit out at about 50-65% (your choice) and using thin card instead of EVA foam. opening books from the kit may be trickier….

DSCF5729

CAVERN WALLS, CORNERS, DOORWAYS AND FEATURESCavern walls using expanding foam are easily done as is, or simply change the dimensions to create smaller walls of your desired height/width. It’s exactly the same with the corners and doorways, use as is or create them smaller to suit. Cavern features need no changes, just create them smaller if you need to, otherwise make as normal.

Dungeon Encounters 3

MINIATURES- Just a quick mention about 15mm minis. There are plenty of great companies who produce suitable minis for 15mm dungeon crawling. The only downfall is that you’ll really need to shop around to get the diversity needed for a proper old skool feel. Classic dungeon monsters are hard to find in 15mm, but more and more manufacturers are bringing out these classic creatures. Checkout other scales such as 10mm, 20mm and 28mm for minis that will suit. Pendraken do some cool dungeon monsters that fit well with 15mm. Don’t forget other great manufacturers to get your usual fantasy races and mosters, 15mm.co.uk, Irregular, splintered light, magister militum to name but a few. Adventurers can be plucked from all manner of historical lines at great prices much cheaper than their fantasy couterparts. Shopping around is key.

So, capping off this article, where ever possible from now on I’ll attempt to throw in some 15mm building tips too, for those of you who want to go 15mm (rather than the 28mm I’ve been detailing here). If you would like the odd 15mm dungeon article let me know in the comments about your opinions on the subject and if you’d like to see a few 15mm articles and I might oblige!
