Terrain Workshop: The Oggum settlement (part 1)

Well, it’s been a while in the making, but here is a mostly done terrain set up specially for my Grinning Skull Oggum (oggam) figures. I’ve been meaning to take some pictures for ages, but haven’t got round to it until now. My inside lighting is rather poor, so I try to take advantage of the brighter light outside. The trouble is, after taking time to gather the separate pieces from their storage areas, set them up on my outdoor table and get in the zone for a bit of photography, what do you think happens?

Yes, it starts to pour down with rain! Just my luck.

Still, I did manage to get a few pictures with some bits in situ (I do have a variety of set pieces but not all at hand) I just knew I shouldn’t have started planting those conifers earlier and got some shots done back when the weather was a little sunnier!

What I will do is (tomorrow if its dry) I’ll start again with the lot and get some better shots, with more dynamism (that being with more oggam for scale) and better close ups too, until then these will have to do.

Grinning Skull Miniatures: FAQ Session

I get asked a lot of questions about the Grinning Skull range, and with that in mind, I’d like to clear up a few points that have been addressed to me on the web and in person. Of course this is just a cross cut of some of the more frequent ones I have been asked, so I thought I’d have a go at posting them up here, so if you would like to ask anything regarding the range, forward your queries to the usual address and I’ll try and answer them!

Is it just Sci-fi that will be in the range?

No, there will be other stuff eventually, fantasy, pulp, zombies/post apoc will feature too. The current emphasis is on the Oggam and the other stuff that inhabits the same universe (See Carnage Continuum)

What’s with all the anthropomorphism?

This gets asked a lot. Why not? I don’t see why some object to creatures/aliens or whatever just being anthropomorphised versions of various animals. Hell, I’d even go for doing some munch bunch inspired scifi fruit and veg just because it’s funny and I could! While I realise it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I know there’s lots of folks who like it too. The oggam grew quite naturally from the ideas from the fluff, so a natural progression was the baahl (Sheep/goatmen) Mugal (Bull/cow/minotaurs) Chukk (chickens etc) If you take a bit of time to read the background, these creatures were formed from supersized agricultural stock, so I had to fit the farmyard in there! Plus I wanted to provide some beastmen proxies for players too. The Draxx were another race based around the proxy idea, to add to lots of the other options for a scifi lizard/draconic army. Will there be other hybrid animal humans in the range? Yes probably, and I’ll apologise beforehand if the idea offends!

Are you going to expand some of your alien races with more options/poses?

Yes, I have ideas for the Pliiim, Kize, Volpurgi, Draxx and other races (some that haven’t made an appearance yet) I’d like to think that when I’m finished, you could make a serviceable fighting force of any race in the range. I’d like to think that eventually there will even be specific vehicles and support weapons, but that might be a fair bit off just yet!

So what have you got planned for the future?

Loads of new ideas that add more to the entire oggam background, and expand the Carnage Continuum background with additional races, fighting forces and off the wall craziness. Charcodonians, Rafinx and Errg to name but a few, but there are a ton more ideas I’d like to develop over time. With the popularity of the Northampton Clown, I just might make a mini of him to add to the killer clowns I’ve done! I don’t think I could run out of ideas anytime soon!!

What are you working on at the moment?

Finishing off a few, a Scrofa Hoggit gang set, League of Anthracks Tor fire warriors (Firrog), Volpurgi troopers, and a few odds and sods. The main focus at present is the Kize, my take on the invasive consuming alien in popular scifi (like tyranids/alien/bio gribblies) I have the first set almost done (general kize warriors) so that will take the available Kize sculpts up to 5 different poses, in addition a set of Kirzor kize has begun (Kirzor are kize with praying mantis blade hands) and a Sluketh bio transport. There’s a few more Kize types planned.

What about vehicle support for the Oggam factions?

I’m still in the planning mode for these, but it will be the bikers and cavalry types that will be done before anything more beefy. I’d like to create an Og-mech as well, but this is pretty far off as we speak as I’m concentrating on infantry mostly at the moment.

What is the Carnage Continuum?

This is my background universe in which the Oggam, Kize, Draxx etc reside. Think of it as an outrageous tongue in cheek cartoony war filled mash up of all sorts. It’s based upon an old RPG setting I created for ICE’s SPACEMASTER game we used to play many moons ago.

Will there ever be 28mm Oggam?

For sure, I’d like to do a multipart oggam soldier, with a set of different heads and weapon options. It might take me a while to get done, since the size of an Oggam in 28mm is around the size of an ogre. I’m not used to bigger sizes so it takes longer compared to 15mm to do as you can imagine, but I’m up for the challenge. Hopefully when it’s done, someone will pic it up and cast it and make it available for purchase (Might even go for KS if there’s enough interest) Time will tell!!

Grinning Skull Miniatures: Greens, greens everywhere etc, etc..

Howdy all, just got around to showing off a few more greens I’ve been doing over the last few weeks, these lot are virtually done, however I might do a few minor additions/alterations to small aspects until I’m happy enough with em’!

I finally got to finish the Draxxion battle group from before. As you can see two troopers, a heavy and a larger alpha leader to go with the larger overseer elite. You’ll notice that the normal troopers are smallest, wiry ones, and the heavy is stockier and a lot bulkier to carry the additional load. The alpha is as you’d expect, biggest, these fellers are dragons and I imagined them to keep getting bigger depending upon their age, eventually he would become one of the overseer elite if he survived long enough, maybe eventually becoming a huge elder dragon  heading his own clan!

You’ll notice the overseer elite in the background, hopefully I’ll be doing one more overseer, he’s going to be a catcher, scout, no quite sure what I’ll name him, but his role will be that of a gatherer of the wounded oggam/human/alien to be made into fleshy burgers and snacks for the OAM Corp (Omni Amalgamated Meat Corp.) in the carnage Continuum fluff related stuff. (It’s always better with a bit of fluff…!!) That one will have an option for him to be holding an oggam or a human by the throat. As well as a bag full of tasty victims ready to be processed!!

Also up is a preview of another race connected with the Draxx, the loyal and ruthless Volpurgi. Here’s the first of them to give you an idea of what to expect.

These little fellers are the hunters, scouts and eyes and ears of the OAM Corp, the vicious alien food production corporation, who exploit loopholes in galactic laws for the trade of various snackfood of dodgy origins. The Volpurgi are human sized ranging from about 5 foot to 6 feet in extremes. The Volpurgi homeworlds were conquered by the Draxx centuries ago, and pledged loyalty in return for not being destroyed, plus they smell “doggy” to say the least, and taste awful, so they serve in great numbers with several Draxxion clans who were part of the alliance.

you’ll also notice that they have a look of a certain cartoon personality (which was entirely intentional) without being a carbon copy. what can I say, I watch too many cartoons! I find them in keeping with the grinning skull style, not being too realistic (lets face it, scifi is totally unrealsistic anyway!) Please don’t ask me to even try hard scifi, cos it won’t happen, there’s loads ofpeople out there who do that already, and they’re so much better at it than I, or ever hope to be. so just don’t go there!

Last up, the fierce Okvan oggam warbeast for the L.O.A. troops (League of Anthracks) THE CLUKKATRIX!!

This wee feller (We’ll ok, he’s big) The result of Okvan genetics on the humble groundbird. By using the Okvan secret formula X, it allows the okvans to rapidly create intelligent humanoid birds from the ones found on the homeworld. Such species as Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Turkeys, Dodos and so on can be turned into deadly Chukk warriors. Excessive amounts directly fed into the creatures result in intense mutations that combine all of Bird and saurian from ancient genes, switched back on.

The stable mutations are kept and trained as warbeasts and gladfatorial beasts, fighting for the pleasure of their masters. I’ve wanted to get this done for ages, and to be honest I wanted to expand the Okvan side of the LOA, since I feel that the LOA troops so far have less options than the empire troops. It’s not until you try and build armies with  the oggam that run in concordance with the background that I’ve written, do you see what combinations you can get. I want to support the entire oggam line totally if I can, so that players have maximum options for oggam Vs oggam stuff, and get totally different forces from each other. With the addition of the chukk for the LOA, I can imagine players might want to field armies of chukk eventually, so even they’d need some big back up. You have to think that in my Oggam sphere, the LOA are my chaos types, and chukk are beastmen. This ones just a really big one!

Again bear in mind that the Volpurgi is human sized, Like I said, he’s a big monster and I think players of other scales and genres could make use of them too, it is basically a humanoid Cockatrice so it’d be cool for fantasy in 15mm and 28/32mm as well. I might do another variation on the same theme, a big riding beast that I’ve coined “Chukkasaurus Rex” that’s more chicken/T-rex. Thats one for the future though.

Well, that’s it for now, I’ll get some other stuff posted with a few WIPs I’m working on, and maybe you’ll get to see some of the Kize forces I have done.

Grinning Skull Miniatures: My growing Oggam warhosts…

DSCF2728 Although the title of this post, does sound a bit like some kind of medical condition, I can assure you even so my Oggams have been growing, I’m not in any pain!! Seriously though (Well, not too serious…) I just wanted to show you my warbands being prepared for some WAR PIGS playtesting, I still have a fair bit of painting, terrain making and writing left to do, but at least things are starting to come together slowly with the whole thing. In between sculpting new stuff, back logs of miniatures in my painting queue and so forth, the ideas continue to flow regarding the famous mutant pig ogres and the game universe of all things Grinning Skull, otherwise known as the “Carnage Continuum”, the messed up place born from my head!! I would show you here my latest creations in green, such as the now finished “Clukkatrix” and the treacherous canine Volpurgi troopers, but I forgot to take some photos in my haste for getting away this week! I do promise to get the pics up next week, along with some fluff concerning the whole Okvan Chukk and their oggam masters. (And some about the role of the Volpurgi and how they fit in…) Anyway, on to the real business. Above you can see two units of my League of Anthracks battle brothers and fire support from an accompanying Firrog Tor fire warrior. It’s highly likely that they will be joined by a couple more units of armoured brothers, and and an elite unit of heavy Okvan Stormtroopers too. I’m planning on some support from a Stank (Oggam sewage firing armoured vehicle) and a Trog troop transport, but that’ll be later. Anywhoo, here’s a few pics. DSCF2720 DSCF2721 DSCF2722 DSCF2725 DSCF2727 As for my opposing side from the Empire of Og, up to press I have two units of oggam light infantry done (well, there’s a unit away on photo duties elsewhere…) but, they do have vehicle support from a finished converted APC, complete with custom sculpted tank commander. I have a Trog transporter on the go as well, but that aint finished yet (you can see the undercoated vehicle in the pic) these dudes even have a allied Scrofa Truffle miner and his loyal pigdog in tow, hired to root out precious fungi for the boss! DSCF2332 DSCF2229  DSCF2231 DSCF2232 You might have noticed in the background of the first pic, some strange looking buildings, these are prototype designs for styles of oggam architecture which will be playing a big part of the WAR PIGS campaign rules, more about them later as I’m still working on a lot of designs and types. Ion Age reborn! Great news from Alternative Armies and 15mm.co.uk!

I just wanted to reblog the latest news from AA and 15mm.co.uk, a great bit of welcome news for us 15mm gamers especially, with a relaunch of their Ion Age universe. Anyway, I’ll let the them explain in their own words rather than me have a go and possibly cocking it up!

Today is a special day for it is today that Alternative Armies and 15mm.co.uk would like to announce to all of their lovely customers and fans that there is a new baby in our brand family and its name is www.theionage.com .  Its a little chap just now but its gonna grow real fast and if you are a fan of science fiction miniature wargaming with a focus on Space Opera and heroic style rather than a trend of re-hashing a grim and repetitively bland future then The Ion Age is for you.

Ever since Gavin Syme first played the original Ion Age game ‘Firefight’ back in the 1990’s he has wanted to put The Ion Age back where it belonged, front and centre, back where it was in the early 1990’s with Alternative Armies.  Its taken time and a lot of effort but the moment is now here.  Releases and surprises are lined up, rewards and specials all arranged, a rule system in the play test stage.  Not only in the popular 28mm scale but also in the booming15mm scale too.
