A Tale of Two Bossk’s: Cleethorpes Geekabilia 2017

11 Jun

Back in April, I managed to get myself and most of the kids to Cleethorpes in North Lincolnshire (otherwise known as “Cleggy” to us here), not just for a week away with the family, but to attend a small Con they were holding there. I thought I’d share some pics of the event and some thoughts about it!

Now, me and the kids love any kind of attendable Con, so we were quite happy that while we were there enjoying the time away, we’d also get the chance to get to visit the event. Now, amongst the attending guests, I’d heard that Allan Harris, the actor who’d  played the bounty hunter Bossk in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, was attending, so being that Bossk was always one of my fave character in Star Wars, it was an opportunity to maybe grab a selfie with the guy to add to my Bossk selfie collection!

He’s da Bossk!! My mate Bossk. My collection of Bossk Selfies caught so far!

Having arrived we caught a few selfies with the Cosplayers with the kids (and Bossk, who I’m pretty sure is the same guy from before) as the kids really love getting some photos with the various characters in costume!

As you can see in the above pic of the girls with Harley Quinn, the guy in the top left-hand side of the photo is Alan Harris. unfortunately, my plans for a selfie with him were scuppered when I found out that grabbing a selfie was going to cost me £5! I’m far too tight for that I’m afraid (having three kids with you intent on emptying your wallet does that for you!) Look, I know the guy has to make a living doing these gigs, but what really put me off was that he was so goddam miserable! It even put me off having a chat to him.

On the plus side, whilst outside, I did spot him having a crafty ciggie which gave me the chance to grab this excellent photo. The pic speaks a thousand words!

Q: Which one is the real Bossk? A: The one having a crafty fag outside!!

Anyway, I’m not going to lie, it was a good day out, we had a laugh, the kids enjoyed it and we got chance to stick some pics in the family album (and you also got to see my Blue hair Mk2, which is now Mk4 by the way!) Not the best of Cons (It was pretty small) but a good effort none the less. Plus, I did come out with a pretty sweet haul of Tees (Punisher & Walking Dead) so I’d say it was worth going!

I’ll be attending Sheffield Comic Con in a few months time, so I’ll take some pics there to hopefully share with you lot, so if you see me there, don’t be shy and come and have a chat with this blue-haired bastard!

Crowdfunding Spotlight: Hammer Steam Custom Design Copper Coins on Indiegogo

9 Jun

I wanted to draw your attention to this crowd-funder, that doesn’t seem to be getting any love. Hammer Steam are offering 20 people the chance to get their very own hammered copper coins to their own design specs with this project. Personally, I think that they are quite nice, they have an authentic look and come in a custom box to keep them in.

They seem perfect for LARP and RPG props or counters. My only hesitation is that of the finished designs, if I wanted to design and get myself a set, I’d want it to be exactly how I’d designed it, and judging from the pics, they do seem a bit ropey (the designs that is!) hopefully that wouldn’t be the case.

It’s quite reminiscent of something I’m currently planning (more of that when I have something to show) but I had to show you lot these potentially cool prop coins for your game.

Anyway, check it out on Indiegogo if it looks like something you’d be up for getting for yourself. There are 5 days left and so far, it’s had no takers, but I reckon it’s a project that is worth some love, so show some support and tell them the Grinning Skull sent you!!

Putting publications in print. Anyone want a copy?

8 Jun

Ploughing through the various ways of self-publishing in print is very interesting. So, I thought I’d share a few thoughts on the subject and show you an early version I have had done for quality comparison.

Back in the day, I remember the old indie RPG crowd in a similar position to Grinning Skull, and remembered the various ways of printing their home-brewed scenarios and sourcebooks and rules. Many were spiral bound for ease of use during play, so first off, I wanted to check it out for the old skool vibe. Since many of the titles in the back catalogue (Of which there are over 100!), many of them lack the large page count to justify such becoming an A4 spiral bound book without either compiling them or changing them enough for such a task.

As you can see, “The Witch’s Daughter” (GSAM01) scenario was a good fit, being that the 68-page count does actually warrant such binding. I can say, the printing of the front and back cover is perfect and glossy, the interior is lovely edge to edge printing of decent quality black and white. I can’t complain about this test version.

I hope to produce limited runs of several titles over time and offer them for purchase to see who would be interested in having a copy (If your interested in getting a copy in this or another format, please get in touch and I’ll give you more details) Print titles planned for this A4 format (Probably more likely to be in A4 Saddle-stitched format) will include Modules GSAM01 The Witch’s Daughter (Above) GSAM02 Singularity (Sci-fi adventure, coming soon) and GSAM03 Betrayal at Tarsus Mor (fantasy adventure, coming soon), plus there will be Grinning skull’s Book of Riddles (an edited and combined edition of 100 Riddles volumes 1 & 2), A collected and added to version of Grim’s Dungeons of Doom articles found on this site, and the next Grinning Skull Compendium/Annual for 2017.

Let me know your thoughts, interest and comments, either by the comments box below, or contact me via the form.

Also, a quick reminder, The Witch’s Daughter is still available from us in PDF format and as part of the “Witch’s Daughter Adventure bundle” deal that adds extra relevant titles at a discounted price.

Another General Election, same old bag of shit. Grinning Skull’s politics rant!

7 Jun

Well, it’s a subject that I don’t entertain very often, the reason being, I fucking hate politics.

For us here in the UK, we have a General Election tomorrow to see which c**t gets put into office (or stays in) but while I usually exercise my right to vote, this year I can’t be bothered.

I have decided that however I vote, the chances are it’ll end up being one of these freaks in power. None of them are either inspiring, nor are they a strong leader I’d prefer to run this broken country I live in. Full of lies, full of broken promises, political candidates parade around kissing babies and arses, just to secure your votes, and if you are fool enough to swallow their bullshit, more fool you.

Now, I don’t want to start a discourse on here about how one party is better than the other, in my opinion, they are all the same. Nor do I want to upset any of you with your views, you vote for any you like, just that they offer nothing that I’m buying.

I’m sick of hearing about how they are going to sort things out, the economy, terrorism, health service, public sector, immigration, defence etc etc etc…Fuck it, all they ever do is squabble and back peddle. No matter how I would have voted, the results will always be the same.

A long time ago I would have voted LibDem (free the weed and all that) but after their cosying in bed with the Tories last time, what is the point? Plus Farron is not someone I could see fighting for us Brits on the international stage. It’s not like my vote would even count in my area anyway, it’s so up Labours arse round here, there’s no doubt that they’ll get in here yet again, absolutely pointless.

Whatever happens, the country will be broken. The SNP will eventually split the union (On a side note, why do the SNP leaders of late have second names of fish? Salmond, Sturgeon, what next Carp, Eel, Squid?) The NHS will end up overstretched and we’ll all have to pay up or die for medical help. Prices will go up and up and up and up, squeezing us for our last drops of blood.

There is nothing to inspire by having an election, just like the Brexit referendum that has just left chaos and doom, the only hope there seems to be is that of the movies and fiction. Still, at least the rest of the world is fucked as well, we’ll all go down together when the space brothers come and farm us for meat.

This’ll be the last time I even mention the subject, I’d rather not think about it. Time to put my fingers in my ears and sing “lalalalalalalalalala….” until it’s quiet again, I’ll just wake up the next morning and get on with things as if these monsters don’t exist…
