It’s been the ruin of me! Scratch built 15mm modern ruins scenery!

28 Feb

DSCF2096

So, I thought I’d also share my latest additions to my scratch built scenery, my post apoc blasted modern ruins. I intended these for use in modern to zombie, post apoc and sci-fi. I try and make stuff that will fit a wide range of use due to real lack of storage, otherwise I would make all sorts of random big scenics, just cause it would be cool to do! I can’t unfortunately so the bits have to be more multifunctional. First bit is a large base of 3 ruins, cost nothing to make, pretty basic, but effective. Pictures say more than words, here’s the pics.

This next piece is what was originally a broken toy house I had to dispose of from my toddlers, it was dangerous and snapped. The rules of my house is, if it’s going in the bin, Dad’s going to put it to some use! I added some wood bits, foam card, tiny square foam craft stickers, bits of crap and dried plaster left overs and some other bits from my bits box. It turned out nice, the inside I prefer to the front, but it is going to be a good addition to the ruins collection.

I thought you might appreciate some action shots, so I present these just to give you a better idea where this is going to, As you can see the black dog building next to them, as with a few 15mm figures for scale (including the 10mm minotaurs) I do have more planned, enough i hope to do a large section of ruined city, but time will be a factor for any deadlines getting round to them.

Hope you like them!

Survivors ahoy! Pendraken 10mm sci-fi civilians

28 Feb

DSCF2069DSCF2070

I thought I’d share with you my last entry to the Pendraken painting comp 2013. This lot are from their sci-fi range, Male sci-fi civilians and female civilians. They turned out ok and don’t have a cat in hell’s chance of winning I don’t think, but regardless of the comp the reason I got them was ready for the release of their 10mm modern zombie range coming soon (which I will be getting you can be sure!)

While there aren’t too many armed ones in the mix, they are fine for modern survivor types that one would need in a 10mm apocolypse. My plan is to run a long campaign in both 10mm and 15mm. With that in mind I need to replicate key models and scenery from 15mm in 10mm. What is handy is that Model railway N scale is pretty much a good match for 10mm, so it should be relatively easy to find the same sized modern stuff I need (plus I use a lot of card scenics, so a bit of jiggling the print out, I can match all of the cardstock layout like for like) N scale is pretty popular so there are lots of cars, buses, tiny bits of details and cool things I can add to the mix, I love it all and intend to use it so the 10mm games where I get the chance to pit zombies vs government forces. I can even do airport based games like in the movies and computer games as there are lots of 1/144 options for 747s and aircraft.

It will be sweeet!!!!

The main survivors in my 15mm lot will also need proxies, so that’s what is going to be a pain, but a bit of imagination and innovation I reckon i’ll suss it out.

DSCF2054

As you can see, here’s what I have so far, I have a male armed civvy in a baseball cap, a civilian female and a mixed group of fleeing folks, they will do for scenarios like evacuations, riots, rescues and a whole host of other stuff where panicking bods are needed.

The single based ones are to represent my main survivors, or my cast so to speak.
DSCF2074

So, as you can see, this is Beth 10mm, and Beth 15mm, She is a main player in the campaign. Beth is a tough cookie, before the event, she was a reporter for the Herald. She has seen her share of danger, betrayal and death since it happened, but has managed to keep some humanity for others in her situation. The learning curve was steep, but now she kicks ass.

DSCF2077

This is  Joe (10mm little Joe & 15mm big Joe!), Joe used to drive his truck for a local logging company before the event. He had his issues with his boss, his on off girlfriend, and his heavy drinking. When the undead took all that away from him, having to decapitate his girl lead him to give up the booze and not waste what was left of his life. Joe still has his truck and is a sureshot with his double barreled shotgun. He used to love hunting at the weekend with his buddies, nowadays he still hunts but with things as they are, it could be his buddies he ends up hunting…..

So you get the idea, my plan is to get my main 15mm survivors with their little versions. Hopefully Leon and Dave have some good matches planned for their 10mm survivors, and hopefully some existing ones in their ranges now that should fit for what I need. It’s going to be a challenge, but will be great fun getting the chance to keep the campaign interesting to fit a whole heap of new gaming options into it that I would have problems with doing in 15mm.

More civvies to come and a few more 10 & 15mm characters. Even Joe’s truck comes in two sizes….

Peace out surivors…..

More Reinforcements, Irregular Miniatures 15mm & 6mm Treemen!

27 Feb

DSCF2082

Ok, next up I’m continuing with my latest idea, my Treeman/ent warband for fantasy skirmishing. I’m trying to be as scale free as I can when it comes to bringing it all together, that way I can use these for both 15mm and 25/28mm if I fancy it.  First up are the two 15mm Irregular Miniatures ents from their fantasy range. You hve some idea of the size of these fellers when I say they are mounted on 40mm x 40mm bases, so they are quite chunky. While they aren’t the nicest sculpts, or even that well detailed, at least they do what they are supposed, big lumbering animated wooden brutes, they will suffice as big hitters lead by my Ent hero I sculpted before!

While I was pondering on them before I painted them, I swore that they reminded me of some famous celebrities. It bugged me for a while as I gave them a few coats of paint and my daughter said, “The hairy bikers. That’s who they look like!” She hit the nail on the head, that’s exactly who they reminded me of (minus the bushy tree canopy I stuck on them, trust me without that, they were Ent versions of the boys!! For anyone who isn’t familiar with the lads, the Hairy Bikers are successful BBC  TV chefs with many series under their belts, I wonder if the guys at Irregular were inspired by them to create the figures? Anyway here’s a pic to show you what I mean!

The-Hairy-Bikers-Simon-Ki-007

Back to the figures…These only cost me £2.60 a pop, so I think they are great value for the price, and could quite easily use these in big units as rank and file figures (which I may get a few more to add to the army on my next order) Next up 6mm treemen…

DSCF2088

These lot are also from Iregular, they are Tree spirits in 6mm scale and are roughly the size of a 25mm figure, so will be ideal for a unit of rank and file lesser entlings. Even though they are 6mm, they’re still bigger than the average 15mm figure, and in heroic 28mm or similar games will provide me with cheap fodder foot soldiers in both scales. At 60p each, I will be getting a hell of a lot more to bulk out my Entish host. The sculpt is what you’d expect, nothing special, but these have more of a tree feel to them rather than human, een the face is more like a creature than that of a human, which is what I like, so thats a bonus!!

DSCF2085

Ok, this one isn’t by Irregular, nor is it strictly a miniature, but I came across this resin figure on Ebay (or should it be tree-bay, or bay tree…) It came pre painted and shapes up to roughly the same size as the 6mm ents. All I did was base it up, give it some magic inkwashes and highlights, stick some modelling lichen on the top to match, and bob’s your uncle (and he was too!) Upside, he’s a good character figure to go in with the similar sized models, down side, it cost me a few quid (remember I am tight) Next time I get one, I’ll probably get some instamould stuff so I can reproduce it a few times, that way I will feel a little better for forking out more than I did for one of the 15mm ones!!

DSCF2089DSCF2091

I have more stuff coming and to paint for this themed warband, next will follow the 2mm ents. Yes you heard right, 2mm! Why? little swarms of saplings of course, baby ents!

Trust me they’ll be ok when I’m finished…..

In the future, even goats wear shades…15mm Irregular Miniatures Sci-fi Goatmen

27 Feb

DSCF2071

Well, I’m back after a time of chaos and stress, hope you haven’t missed me too much!. Yes, as well as it was half term, I haven’t had much time near the PC as I would have liked, but it did mean I could attempt to get some stuff painted up out of my lead mountain.

First up are these irregular miniatures goatmen, I still have more to get done, but at least now I have a squad done and along with the Pendraken 10mm minotaurs I did, they will make a nice beastman force for my collection. I’ll slowly get my hands on some other manufacturers beastmen as and when I find them, both sci-fi and fantasy, that way I’ll have a perfectly good fantasy side to use as well, and a huge horde of variously armed types for future games. The pose goes well with the minotaurs too, given the right handed justification they blend in nicely and don’t look out of place. The shades they wear does mean that I’ll probably have to convert a few of the fantasy versions to wearing similar eyegear, but luckily for me a few of those actually broke while trimming them, so they needed a bit of greenstuff to make them usable anyway!

Overall I have always liked these models and did have a load of them years ago. I do wish Irregular would put out some newer versions, maybe a few different poses, or armour and weapon variants all wouldn’t go amiss, if they did, I for one would buy them.

That’s Ent-ertainment!! own sculpted Ent for my Entish hordes!!

20 Feb

If you remember, I showed you lot a pic of the Fanticide Blood tree warband a bit ago, and well, it did inspire me to go out and look at what miniatures of a similar vein are available out there. After hours of searching and looking, I found all sorts of stuff from all sorts of different manufacturers and companies, some good, some not so. So it dawned on me that, I should start a little fantasy warband of my very own to add a splash of Entish goodness to my collection. the idea is to create the warband/army so it can be used in either 15mm or 25/28mm for some fantasy based skirmishing battles, something I have missed doing for a few years. It’s different, unusual and something I haven’t done before having an Entish horde, and I suppose it’s exactly why the fanticide blood trees were done (plus, I can get some of them as well to add to my mix!)  I made a few mini orders here and there, and as ever I now wait for postie to fetch me my goodies.

Not being a patient sort, I thought I would get out the greenstuff and create myself one or two (or more) of these creatures for myself as some of them can be quite expensive, as well as adding my own personal touch to my fledgling army (or should that be sapling?)

Here I present to you, the first of my own sculpted Ents, Oak Horn the Grim

I’m actually quite proud of how it turned out, he has got a load of character and will add a great level of variety to my forces. It has made me want to create more of these for my use, although I will be making them all totally different, the tree theme should tie them all together nicely! Here’s a few out door shots, in a more naturalistic setting (My back garden that is!)

DSCF2028

For those who would like to see some idea of scale, here you go a 30mm-ish Minotaur (You may recall Boris who features in a few of my size comparison shots from time to time!) and the Pendraken 10mm Minos (as I said before these are pretty much the size of a 15mm figure, so bear that in mind)

DSCF2051

I’ll post the newer additions as and when I get them done, but I do hope you enjoy!!

Peace out tree lovers….
